With the release of Phase 4 of Wrath of the Lich King Classic, comes the new Icecrown Citadel raid. For players who are not yet raid-ready, there is a way to get caught up in just one week using the new Random Dungeon Finder (RDF) and Gamma Mode systems.
Step 1: Level to 80
If you are not already level 80, the first step is to level up your character. The best way to do this is to spam RDF dungeons. In between dungeons, you can farm mobs in high-impact AOE areas. To make this process even faster, be sure to get full buffs before queuing for dungeons.
Step 2: Gear Up
Once you reach level 80, you need to gear up to meet the minimum requirements for RDF heroics and Gamma Mode dungeons. These requirements are called average item level (AIL). For normal heroics, you need an AIL of 180. For alpha dungeons, you need an AIL of 187. For beta dungeons, you need an AIL of 200. Gamma Mode dungeons are expected to have an AIL above 200.
To quickly gear up, head to the auction house and purchase some Bind-on-Equip (BoE) gear. You can find a list of crafted BoEs that are good for catching up in my guide. If you are not sure what to buy, look for gear that has a high item level and good stats for your class.
Step 3: Run Gamma Mode Dungeons
Once you have met the minimum requirements for Gamma Mode dungeons, start spamming them. Gamma Mode dungeons are more difficult than regular heroic dungeons, but they offer better rewards. You can get up to 264 item-level BoE boots and legs from Gamma Mode dungeons.
Step 4: Farm Ashen Verdict Reputation
In addition to gearing up, you should also start farming Ashen Verdict’s reputation. Ashen Verdict is the new reputation system in Phase 4, and it is how you get the new 277-item level rings and recipes.
To farm Ashen Verdict’s reputation, you need to clear the first two trash rooms of Icecrown Citadel over and over again. Each run will give you about 1,000 reputations.
Step 5: Run Icecrown Citadel
Once you have geared up and farmed enough Ashen Verdict reputation, you are ready to start running Icecrown Citadel. The first week of the raid will be the most difficult, but it is important to get your foot in the door early.
If you are not comfortable leading your own raid, you can join a pug. Just be sure to let the raid leader know that you are new to the raid and that you are willing to learn.
